AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a potent activator of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an enzyme often referred to as the body’s “master metabolic switch.” When AICAR activates AMPK, it mimics a cellular state of energy deprivation, tricking cells into thinking they have low ATP levels.
